A Q&A with Cannon Green

Tucked into the heart of historic Cannon Green, this beloved venue captures everything couples love about a Charleston wedding, including lush courtyards, layered history, and an effortless sense of hospitality. We sat down with the Cannon Green team to talk about what makes their space so distinctly Charleston, from hidden photo spots to standout culinary moments and insider tips for creating a celebration that feels both elevated and relaxed.

What makes Cannon Green unmistakably Charleston? The architecture, the history, the vibe?

Cannon Green feels unmistakably Charleston because it layers history, architecture, and atmosphere into a single, effortless experience. It blends preserved historic architecture with a garden courtyard that feels rooted in the Lowcountry. Our relaxed, refined atmosphere, paired with seasonal Southern cooking and warm hospitality, captures the quintessential Charleston feel.

Are there hidden corners or secret spots at your property that make for unforgettable photos?

I love the walkway in front of the living wall for a first look – the pillars and sea of greenery make for the best photos of that special moment. I also love the lounge furniture up in the Overlook for more intimate couple photos. While you’re up there, be sure to open the pop-out window in the Chef’s Table for a great photo opp and birds-eye view of the courtyard.

What are your favorite unique Charleston touches? Cocktail inspirations, local bites, or signature experiences?

Our canapes are where I feel like the lowcountry flavors shine. From Steamboat Creek Oysters to Lobster Fritters and Pimento Cheese Deviled Eggs – cocktail hour is a great time to show guests all that Charleston has to offer. I also love when couples bring in Oysters XO, their servers walk around the Courtyard and shuck oysters live for guests- it’s such a fun and interactive experience. We also have fun Mule Bars and Bourbon Bars to enhance couples’ bar packages.

How does Cannon Green celebrate Charleston’s culinary scene or local flavors?

A key part of our celebration of local flavors is our partnership with Dogpatch Farms, working closely with Event Chef Casey Costa to source vegetables that are grown with care and harvested at their prime. These farm-fresh vegetables are used seasonally across the menus, allowing dishes to evolve throughout the year and reflect what’s coming out of the fields at that moment. This direct connection between farm and table not only supports local agriculture but also ensures guests experience the most vibrant, authentic flavors Charleston has to offer.

What’s a standout moment from a past wedding that really shows off your venue’s magic?

I loved Barry and Lindsey’s February wedding this past year – they truly used the buyout of the property to its fullest potential. They had an oyster-inspired welcome sign on the projector in Wild Common, which complemented their ice sculpture raw bar in the Garden Room. It was one of the most fun cocktail hours I’ve seen all year – bride and groom were dancing with the live saxophonist on the staircase by the end!

Are there insider tips for making the guest experience feel luxe but relaxed?

We always recommend focusing on flow and comfort first. Seamless transitions between spaces, plenty of places to sit and mingle, and pacing the evening so nothing feels rushed. When guests know where to go and feel taken care of, the experience instantly feels elevated. Luxe doesn’t have to mean overproduced – it’s about how guests feel from the moment they arrive.

When’s the best time to book for a spring or fall Charleston wedding?

I’d say anywhere from 10-15 months out. We are seeing such a trend right now with shorter-term bookings, under a year out. Luckily for our clients, Charleston has such an amazing vendor community that our couples can find planners, photographers, florists, and entertainment in a much shorter window of time.
