Q&A With DJ R Dot

How did you get into Dj-ing?
It started back in college around late 2004/early 2005. One of my best friends started DJ-ing and we started doing house parties during the summer. I always loved music so I started playing with the turntables a little, mostly to give him a break at the beginning and then I fell in love with it. He went to SC State in Orangeburg, SC and I was at College of Charleston, so after the summer I wasn’t able to spin or play with the turntables unless I went to a party in Orangeburg. So with my school refund check I went and bought my own equipment sometime in 2005. I started doing fraternity and sorority parties on campus and with the help of some local DJs, I got the opportunity to spin in some bars and clubs and the rest is history!

What has been your biggest inspiration?
The joy that I feel when I’m playing music that people love. I was working a job that I hated and I began to work hours that made it impossible for me to DJ and work on that job. So I made a decision to quit and do what it was that I loved, which was DJ-ing. Since I’ve made that decision the road hasn’t been easy but things keep falling in place at the right time that makes me know that I made the right decision to step out on faith and follow my passion. Ten years later, and I’m a full time DJ, my DJ crew, The Clubbullies, has a Saturday night 3 hour radio show on 95SX, and said DJ Crew is also sponsored by Bud Light. My inspiration is the feeling of knowing that I’m making the right decisions in my life.

What do you love about being at DJ?
I love the feedback from the crowd. You can see people’s cares and problems just drift away when they hear their favorite song being played. Or the amazement they get when you mix two songs together that they have never heard of before. I love being able to help make someone’s special day a little more special by playing their favorite college jams for them and their friends during a wedding reception.

What challenges are you facing as a DJ today?
Keeping up with new music. In this day and age, there is so much new music being released daily its hard to hear it all.

What advice would you give to up and coming DJs?
Never give up. If you believe in what you do and truly have a passion for it, you should go after it and have no regrets.

What do you love about Charleston and Cannon Green?
The atmosphere, the people, the food! When you think about Charleston you think about how pretty downtown Charleston is, you think about the beaches and the beautiful weather and Cannon Green has incorporated all of those things into their establishment. From the paintings of people at the pool, the big live green plants that are inside, and how the big open glass windows let the sun come into the building that makes you feel like you are outside in the summer even on the coldest days of winter. And I don’t even have to mention the courtyard….breath-taking.

What’s your favorite thing about the music in Charleston?
I love being able to go out on any day of the week and hear live music of all kinds.

How does the music in Charleston influence your work when you’re here?
I’m born and raised in the Charleston area, Charleston music has influenced my whole life.

What’s your favorite item on the brunch menu at Cannon Green?
The shrimp and grits are bomb! You can’t go wrong with the fried chicken sandwich either!!!!!
